Biography

Ruben Martinez-Cantin is an associate profesor at the University of Zaragoza. Previously, he was a scientific advisor at SigOpt, a SF startup focused on Bayesian optimization and a senior lecturer (profesor) at the Centro Universitario de la Defensa, attached to the University of Zaragoza. Before that, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. He received a PhD and MSc in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from the University of Zaragoza in 2008 and 2003, respectively. In 2006 and 2007, he was a visiting scholar at the Laboratory of Computational Intelligence (LCI) at UBC, working with ML pioneer Nando de Freitas. His research spans many fields, such as: machine learning, robotics, computer vision, optimization, etc. Specifically, he has worked in robot navigation and localization, developmental robotics and robot grasping, reinforcement learning and Bayesian optimization. He is also interested in the popularization of science.
