Short Biography
Ruben Martinez-Cantin is an associate profesor at the University of Zaragoza and a member of the Robotics, Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence group at Instituto de Investigación en Ingeniería de Aragón (I3A) in Zaragoza. In 2017, he joined SigOpt, a SF startup focused on Bayesian optimization (acquired by Intel in 2020) as a scientific advisor. Until 2019, he was a senior lecturer at the Centro Universitario de la Defensa, attached to the University of Zaragoza. From 2008 to 2010, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. He received a PhD and MSc in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from the University of Zaragoza in 2008 and 2003, respectively. In 2006 and 2007, he was a visiting scholar at the Laboratory of Computational Intelligence (LCI) at UBC, working with ML pioneer Nando de Freitas. His research spans many fields, such as: machine learning, robotics, computer vision, assistive technologies, optimization, etc. Specifically, he has worked in robot navigation, localization and mapping, humanoid robots, robot manipulation, reinforcement learning, Bayesian optimization, egocentric vision, affordance perception, cell migration, visual prosthesis and visual assistive technologies. He is also interested in the popularization of science.
