Julia Guerrero Viu
I am a PhD Candidate working under the supervision of Prof. Belen Masia and Prof. Diego Gutierrez at Graphics and Imaging Lab, at Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain). Previously, I studied Bachelor in Computer Engineering at Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain) and Master in Computer Science with specialization in Artificial Intelligence at University of Freiburg (Germany). My research interests lie among the fields of computer graphics, perception science, computer vision and deep learning. My PhD thesis focuses on better understanding how our brains visually perceive material appearance in order to build intuitive, perceptually-based representations of appearance for visual content creation. In my free time, I love volunteering in scientific outreach activities and raising visibility of women in STEM.

Una ingeniera en cada cole
March 2024 - April 2024
I have participated in this year's edition of "Una ingeniera en cada cole" ("A female engineer in every school"), as I have been doing for the last nine years. This is a dissemination initiative organized by AMIT-Aragon in regional primary schools (children aged 6‐12) about engineering and science, aiming to increase the visibility of women in STEM, stop gender stereotypes and act as role-model for young girls. Together with my colleagues, we visited three schools: CEIP Hermanos Marx and Colegio Sagrado Corazón Moncayo in Zaragoza, and CEIP Asuncion Pañart Montaner in Ainsa (Huesca).
11F ‐ International Day of Women and Girls in Science
February 2023
We celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11th February. Around this day, I participated in several dissemination activities, including a couple of visits to high schools in Zaragoza and the young researchers' talks organized by AMIT-Aragon and CSIC. We discussed about many critical issues of research nowadays, such as compensations, temporary contracts, mobility, or academic pressure, which are even more notorious in the case of women as an underrepresented gender in our field.
European Researchers' Night
September 2022
We celebrated the European Researchers' Night at Universidad de Zaragoza. Together with my colleagues from Graphics and Imaging Lab, we organized a dissemination activity for children and families about the research areas of our lab. We also showed a few virtual reality demos to the attendees, who enjoyed a lot.
WONNOW Award
2021
I was honoured to receive the WONNOW Award from Microsoft and CaixaBank, a recognition for the best female student in STEM degrees in Spain. This award gave me the opportunity to give interviews in national and regional media, such as El Periodico de Aragon, eldiario.es, Aragon Radio and RTVE (07:15). Recently, I have been included in the "Científicas e innovadoras" online platform, a repository of Spanish female scientists considered influential to inspire young people.
