Purpose of This Document

The purpose of this document is to provide an experienced Systems Administrator with information on installing the CentreWare application and for setting up a printer on the various UNIX and Linux systems.

CentreWare for UNIX supports many printers produced by Xerox as well as other manufacturers. Throughout this document there will be references to specific printer features. Review your printer documentation to verify the features your printer supports.

This document assumes you have purchased your printer with the network interface or have purchased a card separately and installed it using the instructions provided.

Requirements

In general, the requirements needed for printer connection and setup include:

  1. A workstation with the appropriate operating system software installed.
  2. A working knowledge of your network.
  3. A network interface on your printer and appropriate cabling for your network. OR A parallel printer to connect your workstation and printer.

CentreWare Installation

Overview

CentreWare supports a variety of UNIX and Linux platforms.

The procedures contained in this document will enable you to connect your printer in these environments.

Before you install CentreWare you should decide which printing model you will use.

Workstation to printer (Peer-to-Peer)

Print jobs are spooled locally. The Workstation to Printer model requires that CentreWare is installed on each workstation.

Workstation to server (Client-Server)

Print jobs are spooled at the server. The Workstation to Server model requires that CentreWare is installed at each workstation and the server.

Server Based Printing

Print jobs are spooled at the server. CentreWare needs to be installed only at the server. Workstations will use native operating system tools (lp,lpr) for print job submission.

The advantage of server based printing is that in the GUI mode the workstation users will be able to select the desired printer features for each print job without having to install CentreWare on their workstations.

NIS Based Printing

NIS uses a printer configuration map on the server so that when you add a new printer queue on a print server, you only have to update the configuration file in the master NIS server and run make.

NIS clients can the print to queues listed on the server map without setting up any local queue.

Consult your appropriate OS manual for more information on how to set up NIS based printing.

File Availability

Files are available from two sources:

  1. CD
  2. FTP from (ftp.xerox.com)

Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

You must login with ROOT privileges (or if already logged in as another user, issue a su command and supply the superuser password) in order to complete this procedure.

Two files required: A Printer Definition file (One file for all Operation Systems) and a Code file unique for each Operating System.

PrinterPackageXPXX_2001_1_15.tar

Linuxi386DocuPrintXPXX_3.00.10.tar OR

SolarisDocuPrintXPXX_3.01.00.tar

Each .tar file, when expanded, will require disk space up to 4 times the size of the .tar file.

CD-ROM
  1. Mount the CD-ROM (local or remote) to your file system
  2. Type: CD [directory]
  3. TYPE: tar -xvf [path] [filename} [ENTER]

(This step must be done for each of the two .tar files.)

[directory] = path to where files will be expanded

[path] = path to the CD-ROM.

Proceed to COMMON INSTALL procedures.

FTP Download
  1. Download the .TAR files from the Xerox FTP Site (ftp.xerox.com) to a temporary directory.
  2. Type: tar -xvf [filename} [ENTER] (This step must be done for each of the two .TAR files.

Proceed to COMMON INSTALL procedures.

The steps above will create directories of the similar name as the .tar file and expand the file. One for the Code file and another for the Printer definition file.

Common Install
  1. Change your current directory to the Install directory created by the expansion of the .tar file for the Code file.
  2. Type: ./setup
  3. Change your current directory to the Install directory created by the expansion of the .tar file for the Printer definition file.
  4. Type: ./setup
  5.

The install will create a Xerox directory in /usr or /opt depending on OS. Also note: it will not delete the .TAR files or the expanded files.

Starting CentreWare

CentreWare has two modes that you may use to set up and configure printers. The primary mode is graphical to allow ease of use, and a more sophisticated menu structure. The other mode is a TTY based user interface that can be used directly from any terminal window. However, some features such as Auto-discovery and Remote Configuration are not available in TTY mode.

You must login with ROOT privileges (or if already logged in as another user, issue a su command and supply the superuser password) in order to set up or change the configuration of a printer.

Graphical Mode

From a terminal window prompt TYPE: xpadmin [RETURN].

TTY Mode

In a terminal window, TYPE: xpadmin -tty [RETURN].

CentreWare can automatically detect whether your systems X server is capable of running in graphical mode or TTY mode and will start accordingly. (using the display environment variable.)

Upgrade

Many of the printers that CentreWare supports are equipped with Flash ROM on the Main Controller card and/or the network interface. You should consult your printer documentation to determine if your printer is equipped with Flash ROM and on which card. Also, some printer models supported by CentreWare may require the upgrade printer function only be performed while connected to the serial or parallel port of the printer.

You must have a queue configured for any printer you want to upgrade.

DO NOT issue any CentreWare commands during the upgrade process.

In Step 3 below, if the Upgrade entry is disabled (grayed-out) the selected printer requires a direct connection (serial or parallel port) to be upgraded.

upgrade

This procedure requires special upgrade file(s) for each type of printer. You may obtain these files either from the Xerox Web Site (www.xerox.com), or on a floppy disk. Obtain the upgrade file for your printer, copy it to a workstation hard drive, and record the path (drive and directory) to which it was copied.

  1. Start CentreWare from your workstation.
  2. Select the Tools menu.
  3. Select the Upgrade entry.
  4. The Select File dialog will appear and request the path and name of the upgrade file. Enter the path of the upgrade file and click OK.
  5. At the next dialog select the queue for the printer you want to upgrade and click Send File.
  6. CentreWare will copy the file to the printer. Once the upgrade has been completed, the printer will reset and a page will print showing the new version of firmware and that the upgrade completed successfully.
  7. Repeat this procedure if you are upgrading both the Main Controller and the network interface firmware.

Features configured (i.e. installable options, media type etc.) apply to postscript file types only. PCL print jobs don't incorporate the configured features.

When a banner page is configured for a given queue, if you press the default button subsequent queues shall contain the same banner page configuration unless a new default banner page is configured.

How to print (GUI and TTY)

In addition to the lp and lpr commands, you may use Xerox print submission tool, xprint. The following is a brief summary of how the xprint print file submission tool is invoked.

If the queue being printed to had the User Interface enabled when it was created, for each print job submitted the user will be able to select the printer options from the GUI dialog or from the TTY menu depending on which interface you are using (GUI or TTY).

If the queue being printed to had the User Interface disabled when it was created, then print jobs are printed in silent mode using the default queue features.

Xprint commands

The following formats are supported:

xprint [options] [filename ...]

The following options are supported:

-Pprinter_name = printer queue name

-cnumber = print number copies of filename.

-Fnumber = use text font size number, number = (4, 5, 6, . . . , 16, 18, 20, . . . , 40)

-FC = convert non printable character to octal notation

-dprinter_name = printer queue name

-tty = tty interface only

-n or -nomenu = don't display menu or user interface.

-sProfileName = load printer profile settings.

-oOptions = Print a list of all options available for a printer.

-oOption_name = Set the option_name printer feature.

For example to print with predefined settings:

-sProfileName -n = load profile settings file and print input filenames.

For TTY installations, the pop up text menu presented when invoking the command xprint "queue name" is NOT available when invoking the command lp "queue name".

Using Command Line Options

The feature provides the ability to send command line options to the print driver via either the xprint or lp command. With each call to xprint or lp, use the '-o' option plus the printer feature that you wish to set.

Suppose your printer supported legal paper size and you wish to print on legal paper. You can set the option '-oLegal' on the command line and your print job will print on legal paper.

  1. lp -dtest_queue -oLegal paper.ps

You can get a printout of all the options that are available for your printer by using the option '-oOptions' on the command line. This call will print the options sheet for your printer.

  1. lp -dtest_queue -oOptions /etc/hosts
  2.

/etc/hosts will not be printed, only the options sheet.

A feature will work from the command line option only if the required installable option is selected during the queue setup.

A feature will work from the command line option only if the required installable option is selected during the queue setup and has not been restricted by a selected feature. (ex: duplex printing with paper size of an envelope.)

Translation files for command line options:

Along with the ability to set command line options, you can also create 'translation' files for your printer. This allows you to create a new command line option that can contain a list of features to use (a macro, if you will) or simply rename an existing feature name. There are two translation files that you can create, they both must reside in the installation directory under a directory named 'trl', which if it does not exist may be created by a superuser.

  1. /opt/Xerox/xpxx/trl

The first file is named 'common.trl'. It is the first translation file that is referenced when the driver looks for an unknown feature name. The second translation file is named using the printer ppd name with the 'trl' extension added to it.

  1. /opt/Xerox/xpxx/ppd/xr_N40.ppd => /opt/Xerox/xpxx/trl/xr_N40.trl
Translation file Syntax:
  1. Each translation contains a key name (required), feature label separated using the '/' character (not required), and finally either a single feature name or a list of features.
  2. Each translation must be contained within a single line of text. A text line may be joined to next line if it has a '\' at the end of the line.
either a ':' or '='
  1. '#' marks the beginning of a comment field. Thus all text following '#' will be ignored.
  2. Use either a ':' or '=' to define the type of translation being defined. A ':' implies that you are creating a macro (list of features) and a '=' implies that you are creating a definition (renaming an existing feature)
Translation line layout:

name/label : feature_1 feature_2 ... feature_n

name/label : feature_1 feature_2 \
feature_3 feature_4 \
feature_5 ... feature_n

name/label = feature_1

  1. a)
  1. name
  1. A unique key word that is used to identify this translation, {a..z, A..Z, 0..9}. May be used as a command line -o option or in other translations.
  1. b)
  1. label
  1. A label text associated with this macro
  1. c)
  1. feature_?
  1. The following items are allowed:
  2. i. translation key word
  3. ii. built-in feature (see -oOptions)
  4. iii. ppd file feature ==> <UI Name>=<UI option name>

Queue Management Tools

XPQ
Overview

This utility is an equivalent utility to the UNIX lpq command. It allows you to view the current job list for your print queues. This program executes and continues to run and update the screen until all jobs are gone from the queue OR you exit by typing ^C (Control key + C)

xpq can be used by any user to monitor print jobs.

Usage
xpq [print_queue_name] [interval]
Where:

[print_queue_name] = queue name to monitor

[interval] = Desired time between screen updates (in seconds). If no interval is specified the utility will display the current queue status and exit.

XPRM
Overview

xprm can be used by the ROOT user to delete ANY print jobs.

xprm can be used by any user to delete ONLY their print jobs.

This utility is an equivalent to the UNIX lprm command. It allows the user to delete jobs currently in a job queue. Before using xprm, run the xpq utility for the desired queue and note the job number and job name of the print job you want to delete.

Usage

xprm [print_queue_name] [job_number.job_name]

Where:

[print_queue_name] = queue name containing print job to delete.

[job_number.job_name] = job number and job name of the print job to delete.

Server Based Printing

  1. Use the native print submission tools (lp, lpr) to submit print jobs to the remote server (see Server Based Printing Setup).
  2. If the User Interface for the queue you are printing to was enabled at setup and the display access ids were properly configured for the server, each print job submitted by the user will have the GUI interface displayed at their workstation.
  3. Select the desired features and click once on the Print button.
  4.

If the display access is denied or the queue was configured without the User Interface enabled, the user will not be able to select the printer features but will have the print job spooled using the predefined features of that queue.

DCPR or DCxxx Users

Printing

DCPR and DCxxx (ex: DC230) is no longer supported. To print with DCPR or DCxxx follow the instructions in section How to print (GUI and TTY) of this manual.
